Like the title says … why look for wind turbines for sale when you can build your own for a fraction of the cost?

I know it sounds pretty dicey at first.  It certainly didn’t seem like a realistic option for me when I first read about it in Popular Mechanics.

But I am reasonably handy and the more I thought about it the more I wanted to look into it further.  If I could save that much money by making wind turbines myself, it would be well worth it.

After about three months of research, I found a couple top rated products for building your own wind turbines. I got my hands on a copy of each and tried them out.  They all came with a money back guarantee so if it didn’t work out I could always return them.

The product I had the best results with was called Green DIY Energy.  The turbines were easy to build and I had a ton of fun doing it.  When it was all said and done I actually ended up building several turbines that generate about 200-250W each.  I couldn’t be happier.

These plans also included full plans on building your own solar panels.  I haven’t tried those out yet, but it’s on the list of things to do!

Here’s a quick rundown of the pro’s and con’s I found for this product:

Pros:

  1. The plans were very detailed.  They had step by step directions, pictures, and even instructional videos.
  2. Green DIY included a wind map of the continental United States so I could calculate the maximum potential power output of the wind turbines for my location.
  3. They also included information on wind power tax credits and rebates.  After using those, the tax savings actually more than paid for the plans and construction costs.
  4. I mentioned the refund earlier, but to be clear there was a 60 day full refund guarantee.  No questions asked.  As I said, that meant there was no risk to me on the purchase.

Cons:

  1. When I first looked, I thought the price was too steep, but a few days later I caught the plans on sale for $49.97, over 70% off.  (Note:  As I write this, the sale is still going on, so hurry over.  The sale could end any day)
  2. I was a bit confused about one of the parts I had to buy.  A quick email to the company had everything cleared up within a day, and they said they’d clarify the plans where I had the trouble.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier with my investment.  I’m getting power generation beyond what I had hoped.  If you’re at all interested in green energy, you owe it to yourself to try this out.  With the guarantee, you can’t lose.  But I didn’t refund, and you won’t either, because it’s worth far more than what we paid for it!

Before I get into how I built my wind turbines and how I managed to avoid any further searching for wind turbines for sale, let me touch on why you would want  to make your own wind turbine.

First, it’s ridiculously easy to build your own.  I didn’t believe it would be that easy to create your own small wind turbines, but it really was.

Second, if you actually do the research into how commercial wind turbines are made, you would be appalled at the wasteful manufacturing processes many companies use.  That may not matter to some people but to those of us who actually care about reuse and being sensitive to our consumption rates it’s important.

Third, the power output on used wind turbines can actually be fairly low.  If the alternator isn’t very good anymore it just won’t create the wind power you need.  And it can be pretty hard to tell what the power generation numbers will be until you actually have it installed.

Finally, if you build your own diy wind turbine, you know exactly what went into it, and you can make sure to use good quality materials and skip the wasteful processes of most factories.

That was enough for me, I did it and so can you.  And I did it for less than $200!

Hey there, this is Jason.  To cut to the chase, it was pretty easy to find wind turbines for sale.  After all, there’s plenty of manufacturers out there that will cater to large and small applications.  Clean green power is in fashion, it would seem, and even though I wasn’t new to renewable energy sources, I knew there had to be a better way.

I was pretty frustrated with the new wind turbine sources I found.  I know they claimed to be green and all, but the sheer amount of waste that went into creating these things was astonishing.  I went on a plant tour and saw piles of scrap metal and plastics that they just wasted.

There had to be a better way.  I decided to explore the used wind turbine market.  Again, it was pretty easy to find used wind generators for sale, but most of the ones I felt were in a reasonable price range were either micro wind turbines that didn’t have enough power generation capability or they were so old that they would not make a good home wind turbine.

Then I read in a magazine about a new solution.  DIY Wind Turbines.  What a concept.  Now it didn’t matter what prices I found on wind turbines for sale, because I could make my own.
